Gary K. asked about the responsibility labs have in notifying payors when using unclassified codes (see his whole question at the end of this post). My answer is, the test name should be on the claim. Almost all claims submitted using an NOC end up being individually negotiated. How and when to begin interaction with payors is a strategic decision and based on lab specific circumstances. There are definitive regulations about offering tests on a field experience trial basis.

Will the potentially expiring Bush tax cuts mean a banner year for lab M&A this year and into 2012 or will the coding, reimbursement and regulatory uncertainties slow things down?

I'm at Executive War College in New Orleans this week--great turnout and great topics. One thought:  ACOs and Medical Homes rely on laboratory tests, but will we see a rerun to punitive capitations rates and negative environment for smaller, esoteric labs?

In this era of Health Care reform proposals which are morphing on an almost daily basis, concerns over what Comparative Effectiveness really means, discussions on issues surrounding gene patenting and the potential for increased FDA oversight, among other emerging issues, the challenges to successfully launching a product are growing and need to be considered at the very earliest stages of your product development. In the future, I would like to use this forum to discuss what we are hearing and how it can impact our business.
