When screening for breast cancer, providers sometimes start the visit with 2D mammography. Based on the initial 2D images, the provider may then decide to add a 3D Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT). In this situation, providers should use a 3D “add-on” code to bill 2D and 3D imaging services for the same date of service. BCBSAZ is in the process of updating a recently revised pricing policy for mammography services (effective April 1, 2017) that made 3D DBT codes allowable and no longer considered investigational. The future revision allows providers to bill the 2D service and the 3D service for the same date of service, by using the appropriate 3D add-on code.
