Genetic Testing to Confirm the Identity of Laboratory Specimens (Gene.00041)
October 25, 2017The scope of this coverage guideline was expanded to address the clinical validity and utility of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) verification tests intended to validate the identity of laboratory specimens following collection. Genetic testing to confirm the identity of a laboratory specimen [for example, know error DNA Specimen Provenance Assay (DSPA) or ToxProtect] is considered not medically necessary. The CPT codes associated with this revised coverage guideline are 81479 and 84999 when specified as a specimen provenance assay such as know error DSPA. Effective January 1, 2018, CPT code 0007U will be subject to review of this coverage guideline. 0007U: Drug test(s), presumptive, with definitive confirmation of positive results, any number of drug classes, urine, includes specimen verification including DNA authentication in comparison to buccal DNA, per date of service
