Zika Virus Testing by PCR and ELISA Methods

Currently no specific exclusive HCPCS code exists for Zika virus testing. Noridian realizes that the reimbursement for the existing probe CPT codes is not sufficient to reimburse for the extra expenses involved with the current Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) handling and personal protective criteria. Testing for the Zika virus must follow the FDA and CDCP guidelines. This article does not address medical necessity but rather proper coding for claims submission. Claims submissions should utilize the coding instructions in this article regardless of the specimen source. The narrative section of the claim form/loop must contain specific verbiage as it pertains to respective tests; 87999, 86790, 87798 or 87801.
