
Guidance on Maintaining Practice Business Continuity

The July 19 Crowdstrike incident represented the largest single computer outage in history. In terms of quality improvement, it was a paradigmatic sentinel event: unanticipated, with low probability, high impact, and lasting ramifications. The disruption caused massive upheaval globally, with sector-agnostic effects, reaching a gamut of services from online banking to emergency services and broadcast media. They were particularly felt in healthcare, which faced innumerable canceled procedures, delayed medication administration, discontinuous clinical services, innumerable safety events, and ultimately an estimated $2 billion in financial losses. This piece looks at the Crowdstrike incident’s impact on radiology, analyzing the core risk management elements essential to mitigating practice disruption.
