Palmetto Releases Draft LCD on IHC, Special Stains

Palmetto GBA, the Medicare administrative contractor for J11, has released a draft local coverage determination (LCD) policy on overutilization of immunohistochemical (IHC) and special stains. The draft LCD is designed to address overutilization of ancillary stains by pathologists. According to the draft, ancillary stains prior to review of the H&E are not acceptable. Pathologists must first review the H&E and then document the medical necessity of the ancillary stains, the result of the stains, and the adequacy of controls. The public comment period on the draft LCD begins Nov. 10 and ends Dec. 25.
