UHC Implements DEX Z-Code Requirements on Medicare Advantage Claims Starting October 1, 2021

September 7, 2021

United Healthcare announced an updated policy for Medicare Advantage plans, whereas they will be requiring providers to include the appropriate DEX Z-Code identifier on claims beginning October 1, 2021.

In the same format as Medicare, the Z-code will be submitted in Loop 2400. While UHC will not require a separate registration of these z-codes, providers will need to ensure qualifying tests are registered with the MolDx Program.

If a provider has not already registered their test for a DEX Z test code they can register at MolDX® Program (Administered by Palmetto GBA)

To access and obtain a DEX Z-Code identifier, visit the DEXTM Diagnostics Exchange, select “Register My Organization” and follow the prompts, including participation in the MolDX program.

In March 2021 United Healthcare originally announced the policy would go into effect on June 1, 2021.  In June however United Healthcare delayed the policy stating further communication would be provided.   This month United Healthcare confirmed the policy new implementation date of October 1, 2021.
