Updated ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines Released

CMS and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) updated the guidelines for coding and reporting the ICD-10-CM for 2013. Coding with ICD-10-CM requires familiarity with the organization and format of the codes along with the coding conventions and guidelines that direct code assignment. The ICD-10-CM coding guidelines include the conventions in the Index and Tabular sections, general coding guidelines, and chapter-specific coding guidelines. When assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, compliance with the guidelines is required under HIPAA.
