Use of Legacy Identifiers Ending
February 28, 2013Medi-Cal will deactivate all currently active nine-digit Medi-Cal legacy provider numbers on March 29, 2013. “Atypical” providers (i.e., blood banks, Christian Science practitioners, and multipurpose senior services program providers) are exempted from this deactivation and may continue to use the legacy number. With the exception of the atypical providers listed above, effective for dates of service on or after March 30, 2013, all Medi-Cal claims and transactions must use a valid NPI. Legacy provider numbers will not be accepted for use in claims or transactions with dates of service on or after March 30, 2013, including eligibility verification. Failure to use NPI numbers will result in denied claims and lack of access to electronic transactions.
