It’s Important to Know How Your LIS Stacks Up. Take This Survey to Find Out.

November 28, 2022

The laboratory information system (LIS) plays a vital role in diagnostics. The LIS is the workhorse of the lab and is vital to day-to-day workflow and functionality. This essential system supports operational efficiency, testing capacity, timely specimen reporting, analytics, and business reporting.

Many labs continue to use homegrown or on-premise systems that do not take advantage of the many benefits of a cloud-based LIS, such as collaboration, scalability, and automated software updates. As testing menus change, labs need to manage shifting capacity and as the industry consolidates, many labs face the daunting task of unifying lab locations using different technologies. As part of this process, lab leaders should be considering how to augment or replace their infrastructure and resources that explore different LIS solutions are helpful.

Last year, the XiFin team surveyed laboratories to explore satisfaction with laboratory information systems provided by eighteen different technology vendors as well as homegrown LIS solutions. The study gathered information on LIS reliability, scalability, security, and interoperability. Survey respondents included nearly 100 individuals representing laboratories across the United States. Respondents exemplified a variety of organizations including:

  • Anatomic pathology laboratories
  • Clinical pathology laboratories
  • Molecular diagnostics laboratories
  • Reference laboratories
  • Genomics laboratories
  • Hospital outreach programs
  • Hospital outpatient laboratories
  • Toxicology laboratories
  • Pain management clinics
  • Biopharma research laboratories

The complete results of the 2021 survey can be found in the State of the LIS Industry whitepaper. Some of the key trends identified through last year’s survey include:

  1. The LIS in use at many labs have difficulty integrating with other systems, such as EMRs, EHRs, RCM systems, and other lab instruments
  2. Many LIS lack effective operational management reporting
  3. Many organizations lack confidence in the security of their LIS or are unsure of whether they are operating on the most up-to-date version of their LIS software

XiFin is committed to staying engaged with the diagnostic community to keep abreast of the latest market trends and satisfaction. To help do so, this year the team is conducting a new 2022 State of the LIS Industry survey. This year’s survey explores the laboratory information systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) market from a perspective of functionality, integration, value, and satisfaction.

Key survey topics include:

Satisfaction with patient and management reports produced by your LIS

Your LIS’s ability to handle all aspects of the TC/PC workflow

The reliability of your LIS

Whether your LIS has the capabilities required to scale with volume growth and test menu expansion

Whether your LIS offers a robust analytics solution

Laboratory testing is always changing with new technologies and ever-expanding test menus that have complex requirements around reporting, authorizations, reimbursements, and specimen processing. These changes impact your laboratory information system. The output from this survey will help your organization understand whether you have the right technology in place to keep up with industry changes, throughput requirements, user expectations, and your unique business goals.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and is available until December 15, 2022. Take the survey and request a customized assessment to see how your LIS stacks up.
