Andrew Deutsch, MD, MBA
Chairman and CEO, Renaissance Imaging Medical Associates (RIMA)

Success Story

Renaissance Imaging Medical Associates (RIMA) is a flourishing radiology practice in Southern California. Dr. Andrew Deutsch founded RIMA in 1999 following a distinguished academic and professional career path. Dr. Deutsch is a nationally respected expert in skeletal radiology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He has published more than 50 original scientific papers, authored four widely used textbooks, and serves as a guest speaker and lecturer around the world. He holds a master’s degree in business administration as well.

Starting with a “greenfield opportunity” to develop a new radiology group, RIMA has demonstrated impressive growth over the years. The practice has scaled to more than 100 physicians, operates multiple imaging centers, and works with numerous hospitals in Southern California and Hawaii. In 2017, RIMA was acquired by Radiology Partners, now the largest radiology practice in the US, serving more than 3,200 hospitals.

Dr. Deutsch credits RIMA’s dramatic performance to a number of pivotal factors, including a:

  • Nimble, customer-focused disposition that permeates the organization
  • Sustained focus on premium service offerings and related enabling technologies
  • Strong partnership with the right billing vendor to help underpin an ambitious business plan.

24x7 Specialization

Over the past two-plus decades RIMA, like other radiology groups, has faced continually shifting business cycles and challenges. In the early days, for example, the market bore a surplus of radiologists – a direct contrast to today’s staffing difficulties. To ensure continued success, the practice has proactively employed innovative solutions to tackle these challenges.

Summarizing this evolution, Dr. Deutsch explained, “we started with a base in hospitals, and over time evolved into outpatient, doctors’ offices, managed care, and urgent care. At first, we supplied final reports during the day and preliminary reports at nights, eventually delivering final reports on a 24x7 basis.”

In addition to supporting an evolving point-of-care model, rapid turnaround, and expanded hours, RIMA has benefitted considerably by offering specialized radiology services more common to the academic world. To this end, RIMA offers the following sub-specialty services:

  • Cross Sectional Imaging
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • Neuroradiology
  • Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Women’s Imaging/Breast Imaging

More than a Billing Vendor

XIFIN CMS provides RIMA with a comprehensive revenue cycle management solution comprised of technology, integrations, analytics, IT support, and services to manage artificial intelligence-driven coding, billing, payment management, hospital credentialing, payor credentialing and enrollment, regulatory support, and more.

Dr. Deutsch is quick to point out that the right billing vendor partnership has been instrumental to RIMA’s success as well. “XIFIN CMS has assembled a really talented team,” he explained. “As a billing company they are efficient and accurate and much more. We talk to them about strategy and challenges in the market. We have a shared drive to consistently meet customers’ needs. It is more than a partnership. They’ve been deeply involved in our growth.”

As an example, to support expanded hours without compromising productivity, RIMA recognized the need for more innovative business practices. So, the organization approached XIFIN CMS with a request for surge pricing support, similar to how ridesharing companies were operating. According to Dr. Deutsch, XIFIN CMS was quick to respond with a seamless solution, even offering some helpful suggestions for rolling it out. Ultimately, the results exceeded expectations.

“I am extraordinarily grateful for this partnership. XIFIN CMS has been essential to all we’ve accomplished,” concluded Dr. Deutsch.
