AHIMA: ICD-10-CM/PCS Transition: Planning and Preparation Checklist
November 1, 2011The transition to ICD-10-CM represents much more than just an increase in codes and field sizes. The scope and complexity of the transition are significant and should not be underestimated. AHIMA’s ICD -10-CM/PCS Transition Planning and Preparation Checklist is a detailed timeline of what a provider should do and when it needs to be done. It is a template for a project plan as much as it is a checklist. This gives your organization a way to evaluate how your efforts compare, what steps you should be taking and when you should reach certain milestones. The ICD-10 implementation planning and preparation process should be accomplished in a phased approach: 1. Implementation plan development and impact assessment 2. Implementation preparation 3. “Go live” preparation 4. Post-implementation follow-up The plan also designates a target audience for each phase to show the personnel most affected by the tasks and suggested start and end dates for each step.
