New Billing Code for 3D Anatomical Segmentation Imaging (C8001)
August 12, 2025Radiology’s role in creating high-value 3D surface mesh files—used in advanced procedures, AI tools, and 3D printing—has expanded as hospitals increasingly perform this work in-house rather than outsourcing to vendors. CMS introduced HCPCS code C8001 in January 2025 for 3D anatomical segmentation, later increasing its reimbursement under HOPPS in April, making it applicable to all hospital outpatient services involving DCM-to-surface-mesh conversion. This change provides new opportunities for providers to capture reimbursement for 3D work that was previously bundled, with further guidance expected in the 2026 rulemaking cycle.
