Proposed California DTC Genetic Testing Bill
March 9, 2020A state senator in California is introducing a bill to increase the regulation of direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies, TechCrunch reports.
State Senator Thomas Umberg (D-Santa Ana) is proposing a new bill, Senate Bill 980, that would expand upon the California Consumer Privacy Act, according to TechCrunch. It adds that the CCPA currently allows individuals to see how their data is being used and opt out of certain uses or the sale of their data to others, but that Umberg argues that the authorization forms are confusing, leading people to be unclear on what they have consented to. Instead, his bill would set guidelines for authorization forms and implement civil penalties for not complying with those standards, TechCrunch says.
