University of Southern California (USC) Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine — An Outreach Success Story
May 25, 2021The University of Southern California (USC) Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is one of the largest and most acclaimed in the country, with nationally and internationally renowned physicians on its staff. When the team at USC decided to open an outreach laboratory to expand their lab services to the community, the department chose XiFin, Inc. as its pathology laboratory information system (LIS).
Physicians, pathologists, and laboratory technicians rely on laboratory information systems to manage their workload and streamline the laboratory’s operational processes to be more efficient. Integrating laboratory systems is a strategic investment that enables labs to optimize performance while building new revenue opportunities.
Connectivity is key to providing successful outreach services. An LIS that integrates with EMR/EHRs, medical devices, analytics solutions, middleware, billing, portals, and CRMs is essential. A good outreach program is integrated with client physicians’ EMR systems so that doctors can order lab tests directly from their EMR. This same interface will facilitate returning the lab results so they can be effortlessly incorporated into the patient records. Sometimes, labs want to implement a purpose-built portal to facilitate lab orders and results. These portals can be integrated with the LIS or provided by a third-party vendor.
Michael Selsted, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Keck School of Medicine of USC’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine said about the investment:
“XiFin’s cloud-based LIS represents a fully integrated end-to-end work-flow solution for our pathology laboratory. The system’s connectivity features enable us to interface electronically with our clients’ EMR systems, key instrumentation within our laboratory, and, ultimately, with other facilities using digital imaging technology to access USC’s professional consultation services.”
